About This Item
Albany. Lith. of Weed, Parsons & Co. [1860s-1870s]. 2¼ x 3½ inches. Trade Card. Ornately printed. Near fine.
Most nineteenth century trade cards do not bear an imprint. This one does, in this instance, advertising a resort house in popular Lake George, New York for the the well-to-do to consider patronizing.
This trade card lists on its face the names of the two brothers who ran the "Lake House" in Lake George, New York: George H. Rockwell and H. J. Rockwell. Local history notes these brothers were the sons of a famous hotelier, George T. Rockwell and notes of him:
"His son and partner, George H. Rockwell, went in 1866 to Lake George and assumed the proprietorship of the Lake House, in company with his brother, H. J. Rockwell. In the fall of 1867 he bought out his father in Luzerne and remained here until 1879, when he went to Glens Falls as part proprietor of the Rockwell House at that place. "
An ornate and lovely 19th century trade card advertising an important New York state resort.
