About This Item
London: Hannah Humphrey, 1809. Wraps. Very good. Gillray, James. 30 x 46 cm. Hand colored etching. A rich farmer's parlour or drawing-room, with curtains drawn over two high windows (right). Lower left corner states, "Drawn by an Amateur Etched by Js Gillray." Bluebell of Scotland, sheet music played and sung by Betty. Wall signboard reads, "Evil communications corrupt good Manners," and below "Betty Giles aged 16. 1808, Cheese Hall." One of the guests twiddles his thumbs, the others pay no attention to the homily on the signboard, and the animal in hang-dog posture. A lad carrying refreshments with the cakes falling out. Lacks small corner at left head, nicks with some loss at right margin.
