Philadelphia: M. Carey and Son. Good. 1818. First Edition. Hardcover. An early description of Illinois by Morris Birkbeck, an Englishman who settled there. Paper boards have significant wear with a few tar-like soil spots and paper loss from margins. Brown repair tape over spine. Missing the United States map. Pages have toning, light foxing, and old dampstains. Map frontispiece, vii, 154. In 1818 Morris Birkbeck founded the British Prairie Settlement of Wanborough, adjacent to the Utopian Albion, Illinois. He was early to recognize the fertility of the prairies and was among other things an agricultural innovator. His letters address prospective settlers and give news of the colony.
