Quarter-bound, grey boards over tan spine covered with woven cloth. Decorative paste-on design to front board, labeled simply "BEETHOVEN". Tissue-guarded frontis portrait of Beethoven by Florence (Pearl) England Nosworthy (1872-1936). Hand illumined. Untrimmed fore-edge and tail. Five-color hand-illumined drop caps at each section head, with ornate tailpiece from front board, repeated at ends of chapters.
Minor rubbing to extremities, toning. It looks like the previous owner (elaborate and very professional-seeming) painstakingly painted his initials, one black and one red, (2.5" wide, and the other 1.5" high) within ornate gold-filled borders, one for each initial. Text is unmarked. Binding tight.
