About This Item
New York: Oxford University Press, 1951. First Edition. Very Good+/Very Good. First edition, first printing, second state in glossy boards. Signed by Rachel L. Carson on the title page. Very Good+ with rubbing to extremities, pages toned, browning to preliminary pages with an exposed hinge. In a Very Good third state dust jacket with toning, shallow chipping to crown and top edge, light wear with a small scrape to the front flap and a corresponding ding the board below; several tape reinforcements made to the blindside. A tremendously popular book, especially given its genre as a natural science book written for the general reader. It won the National Book Award in 1952 and paved the way for Carson's future work, Silent Spring, a cornerstone of the environmentalist movement, which would be issued by a mainstream publishing company, Houghton Mifflin.
