About This Item

London: David Nutt, 1855. First edition. Hardcover. Very Good. 2 vol. 8vo. [5], vi-xx, [3], 4-423, [3]; [3], iv-xii, [3], 4-464, [2] pp. Half later calf over marbled boards with the spines in six compartments, a black leather label lettered in gilt on the spines, gilt decorations on the spines; all edges marbled. Marbled endpapers and pastedowns. Each volume illustrated with a frontispiece portrait of Goethe. NCBEL III 1542. Oxford DNB, Rosemary Ashton, "Lewes, George Henry (1817-1878)". G.H. Lewes grew up poor, and studied science, literature, history, and several European languages. His Life of Goethe sold more than one thousand copies in the first three months and was frequently reprinted afterwards. Lewes' biography explores Goethe's unconventional life and career, including parts of his sexual mores, considered scandalous by his contemporaries. A nicely-bound biography of the renowned German poet. The front joint on volume one neatly repaired, rubbing to parts of the extremities; a modern bookplate on each free front endpaper and an ink note on each first blank leaf.
