About This Item

Chicago: The Reilly and Britton Company, 1904. Second Edition. Hardcover. Fair. Second State. Sixteen full-page color illustrations by John R. Neill. Fair. Green cloth, soiled, rubbed at the edges with some fraying. Square, hinges cracked, front endpaper and frontispiece laid-in, general reading wear otherwise. An early copy of the second state in the "A" binding. Hanff notes that the second state is more commonly seen in the red and rose close bindings, so this copy seems to be scarcer than other second state examples.

Synopsis

Book 2 of L. Frank Baum's immortal OZ series.  Originally published 1904 by Reilly & Britton in Chicago, the title of the popular children’s novel by L. Frank Baum, The Marvelous Land of Oz, was shortened to The Land of Oz within the year. In The Land of Oz, an orphan boy named Tip lives under the guardianship of a wicked witch named Mombi. He intends to scare her with a pumpkin-headed wooden man he made when she returns home, but alas, she is not frightened and instead brings the wooden man Tip created to life with her newly bought Powder of Life. Later that night, Tip and the pumpkin-headed man named Jack Pumpkinhead escape with the Powder of Life, joined by a sawhorse Tip brought to life. They then proceed to partake in adventures throughout Oz, and Tip discovers the secret of his past.
