About This Item
1904. PEMBERTON, Morton H. REUBEN: HIS BOOK. Centralia, Missouri: Published by Reuben [Pemberton], 1904. Small 8vo., embossed brown cloth; 297 pages. First Edition. Pemberton [pseudonym "Reuben"] was a Missouri humorist, lawyer, newspaper editor, and world traveler. Signed presentation from Pemberton on a front blank page, to a long-time Missouri Congresssman: "Hon. D.W. Shackleford, With compliments of the author, Morton H. Pemberton." Dorsey William Shackleford [1853-1936] served as a Missouri Congressman from 1899 to 1919. He was among the Congressmen voting against war with Germany in 1917. He eventually moved to Jefferson City, where he practiced law. An interesting association copy! Good (some wear covers, contents clean & tight; black crayon circles- go figure!- around the publisher's imprint at the base of the title page; around the copyright date, with $1.50 partially erased on the same page; and one around the dedication). $85.00.
