This is a Very Good (Plus) copy of a Later Printing, from three years after. Red cloth binding with titling in gilt on spine and front cover; cover has the publisher's logo in black. Clean text; 334 pages. Frontis illustration and 23 others by W.B. Wollen. Tips are rubbed and there is a slight lean; small scuff to the publisher logo. Similar to Sherlock Homes these stories were originally published in the Strand Magazine between December 1894 and September 1903. This copy is a reprinted edition from 1928. In a full calf binding. Externally generally smart with slight rubbing. Cracking to the front joint. Bumping to the top of spine resulting in loss. Internally firmly bound. Pages bright and clean. Wollen are present, however the plate opposite page 72 is loose. Publisher advertisements to the rear are dated 10.2.96. Boards are marked and sunned. Edges, corners and spine ends are bumped and rubbed, with tears and chips at the spine ends. Page block is tanned and blemished. Spots of foxing noted on the pastedowns, endpapers and some of the pages. Gutter break at page 177, however binding remains sound and pages are otherwise clear. LW. Hardcover. Good/No Dust Jacket.
