Woollcott was a critic writing for the New Yorker magazine and a member of the "Algonquin Round Table." This is a collection of his writings from 1930 to 1943 previously published in popular magazines of the time. Woollcott was the model for the guest in Kaufman and Hart's "The Man Who Came to Dinner," and his ascerbic humor is displayed smartly here. I have catalogued this book under literary criticism because many of these selections deal with contemporary books, but his observations on the current literary and social scenes outstrip this narrow category..
