Not dated c.1938 (first edition was 1911) Quarto hardback, 222 pp. illustrated throughout by Edmund Dulac (12 colour plates and numerous black and white illustrations plus endpapers in red). Beige boards with red pictorial illustration . Near Very Good condition. No inscriptions.

Complete with all 12 lovely mounted color plates by Dulac. Small amount of light water staining on end paper edges (not affecting text at all); very light even toning of text. No owners marks except tiny flag sticker. Not much wear at all. Good Plus. Hinges not cracked in or out. Text Clean. .

First Edition, First Printing (c.1920). Very good plus in deep navy pictorial cloth stamped in gilt and blind. Illustrated with 12 beautiful, full-page, tipped in color plates by Dulac. All present. Missing the very rare dust jacket. Cover a bit soiled, with cover gilt bright, but dull on the spine. Internally fine, clean and bright. Overall, a very nice copy.

New York: Hodder and Stoughton Ltd., 1911. Hardcover. Good. 9 x 11 in. Tan cloth boards with gilt titles. Frontis and 27 color tipped-in plates. Tissue guard at frontis. Condition is GOOD - cloth has some small splits to the edges of spine outside, and inside the joints are started, with the muslin visible but holding. All 28 plates are excellent, bright and clean with no damage to edges. Small bookplate on 2nd blank, text unmarked. Covers have a few tiny spots and some minor toning. Good candidate for framing. Chil. RGR.

Pictorial off-white cloth printed in gilt and black, 133 pages plus colophon, matching dustjacket. Covers have some finger soil and a darkened strip along the far bottom of the front cover, rear hinge internally neatly reglued and secure, text block sound, numerous short closed tears to bottom margins of text pages (likely from little fingers a little too eager to flip pages) and small chips to two lower margins, plates all present and very good with one having a very short closed tear to the bottom, pages clean, no names or other markings. The mylar protected dustjacket is uniformly age-darkened with much of the spine missing, some relatively mild chipping to top of front and rear panels. . First Edition. Hard Cover. Good/Fair. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall.

Though obviously flawed, the presence of [most of] the very scarce DJ is quite unusual. Overall, a handsome copy of this significant work. Minor shelf/edge wear, touch of glue toning at preliminaries, minor foxing at textblock fore-edge (non-penetrating), else tight, bright and unmarred. DJ shows heavy shelf wear, rear panel and flap missing, large chip at head (effecting title text, several small chips and closed tears, even toning, else clean and bright (color pictorial only by Dulac shows no rubbing or wear). Mustard/beige cloth boards, gilt lettering and decorative elements, decorative endpages, frontispiece, decorative boarders at each page, tipped in plates. Small 4to. 250pp. Illus. (color plates).

Original cream colored wrappers stamped in gold and silver. Fore-edge uncut. 28 magnificent tipped-in color plates by Dulac with decorative borders and captioned page guards plus decorative border on text pages. 171, [1] pages.

An out-of-series copy numbered 0000, from a series numbered officially at 750 copies thus, SIGNED by the illustrator in black ink to the limitation page. Possibly the Publisher's File Copy, according to a stamp on the fly-leaf. Publisher's full vellum, with gilt titles and decoration to spine and upper. Top edge gilt, others untrimmed. 'Publisher's' [file copy?] stamp to fly-leaf, partially obscured with an adhesive mark and hand-written ink numbers, scored out. Otherwise internally crisp and clean. Lacks silk ties. Binding shows fairly light wear, with moderate surface marking, and minimal bowing to boards. Very good.

The previous owner, Amanda Severne (1954-2008) of Shakenhurst Hall, Cleobury Mortimer, was herself a book illustrator and also worked in the animation business. She was a "key renderer" on Raymond Briggs's 1982 animated version of The Snowman. A review of the illustrated books of 1911 published in Art and Literature (December 1911) found one reviewer stating "in certain qualities of fantasy and delicate strength, and lurid, imaginative daring, Mr Rackham and Mr Pogany are... inimitable, but for sheer grace and poetry of feeling I am inclined to give the palm to Mr Edmund Dulac. I doubt if Mr Dulac has ever done better work as a book-illustrator than he has put into the series of colour-plates with which he has illustrated Hans Andersen...".
