The maoin actrees is Mary Gray, who is to play Joan, and is in conflict with the director over how the character should be portrayed. Ingrid Bergman originally played Mary/ Joan and won a Tony Award (in its first year) for her performance and later played the same role in 1948 film version.

Ingrid Bergman won a Tony Award for her performance in the play. In 1948, an adaptation was filmed as Joan of Arc. This film dropped the play-within-a-play theme and was a straightforward account of Joan's life, but retained Anderson's dialogue of her story. Andrew Solt collaborated on the movie screenplay with additional historic scenes. Ingrid Bergman again starred as Joan and, although nominated, did not win the Academy Award. ; 117 pages .
