William Arthur Scholes (1916-2007) was one of 14 scientists and technicians who went to Heard Island in 1947 to establish a weather station as the first project for the Australian National Antarctic Research Expedition.

Working as a radio operator and as a reporter for the Department of Information, he spent 14 months on the island, 4000 kilometres south-west of Perth in the sub-Antarctic region. He later wrote a book about the expedition, Fourteen Men, which was named Book of the Month by the influential US reading club of that name and was also published in Spanish, Dutch and Japanese.
