London: Albermarle-Street.: John Murray, 1823. First Edition . Hardcover. Very Good. 4to - over 9¾" - 12" tall. BATTY Capt. 1st ed, VG, 35 pls. In modern half tree calf, marbled boards, some blind tooling. Spine, raised bands, gilt tooling, titles in gilt to calf labels. Internally, half title, [7], (viii) only, not paginated but 35 plates accompanied by 35 leaves of descriptive text, plates are mostly signed in pencil to verso by the initials of Francis Darby, text leaves watermarked 1822, some very light water marks to some margins, new endpapers, bookplate of Francis Darby loose (possibly 1783-1850). (Anderson 336). Batty eventually became a Colonel in the Royal Artillery working in India, Gibraltar, etc. His engravings, though small are very finely executed. A lovely copy!. See ODNB.

In brown morocco, decorative blind and gilt tooling, title in gilt to center, corners and edges rubbed. Spine, raised bands, no title, decorative blind tooling with some gilt, edges worn. Internally, board edges and turn-ins with decorative gilt tooling, marbled endpapers, bookplate of Charles G Graves to fpd, not paginated, lacks half title, [5], (viii only), [2], followed by 35 plates each with a leaf of descriptive text, printed on one side only, marbled text block edges. 19.5*12.5 cm, uncommon in this size. Hotten2) Batty, army officer and artist, wrote and illustrated topographical books about the scenery of France (1822); Germany (1823); Wales (1823); Hanover, Saxony, and Denmark (1828); and India; and Select Views of the Principal Cities of Europe (1830-33), to namer but a few.
