New York, 1954. Seated in profile, in costume. Gelatin silver print. 1 vols. 32 x 21.3 cm. (12-1/2 x 8-1/2 inches). Atelier stamp on rear, and docketed in pencil with the name of the subject ("Harry Belafonte - Almanac"), the date, and the number of the negative and print ("viii LL - 9"). Seated in profile, in costume. Gelatin silver print. 1 vols. 32 x 21.3 cm. (12-1/2 x 8-1/2 inches). Belafonte's film and singing career was taking off -- in 1954 he landed a role in the film Carmen Jones, and in the year Van Vechten photographed him in this series, Belafonte was starring in the Broadway musical "John Murray Anderson's Almanac", for which he won a Tony award.
