Front joint beginning to crack and some wear to the foot of the spine. Internally clean and tight. Herbert 917. The last quarto edition printed before Baskett acquired the patent. The front endpaper has the signature of J. Windle 1713 and further notes of birthsand deaths down to 1915 in the Windle family of Whitechapel and Stepney.

A fine 19th-century family Bible published by Samuel Bagster and Sons. This decorative Family Bible is also bound by Bagster who began printing and binding Bibles in the early 1800s. This 'Holy Bible' is beautifully illustrated with full-page color maps and philological and explanatory notes throughout with tables and indexes for the scriptures. And while the title page of this edition is not dated, the date comes from the preface and is generally agreed upon to be dated 1846.

Minor rubbing to spine and corners, contents clean and crisp. Generally an excellent example.

Meant to be lifetime book, the center of the personal, spiritual and family life. 12 1/4 in. x 10 1/4 in.Brown full calf, modeled and beveled, divided into seven elaborate, floriated segments, tooled in blind, surrounding a large (6 1/2 in. x 3 1/2 in.) segment, bearing the title (Holy Bible) in a Blackletter-style font. Atop is a reclining angel holding a sheaf of wheat, head haloed by golden rays. Five raised bands to spine, with elaborate gilded vignettes to compartments one, three, four and six, book title in compartment two, and "Bible Dictionary and Cities of the Bible" in compartment five. Fine in original full pebbled crimson morocco box. 2 vols. Thick 12mo (4-1/2 x 2-3/4 inches). The Book of Common Prayer is inscribed, "Frances Mary Henrietta Hawkesworth from her affectionate Godfather Rich. S. Hawkesworth 27th August" [18??] (The year has been effaced). A beautiful set.

One plate torn affecting the printed area, one plate frayed on edges, portrait creased. The first title page inscribed by Carey Bull 1742 and with a later inscription reading This book came into the possession of Caroline Brereton, and on her death in 1856, to that of Burleigh Stuart of Dergmony [Omagh]. A good early Georgian Bible with an interesting Irish provence and a much greater number of plates than the usual inserted suite of 50 or so.

The Cole title is bound before the general title to the Bible and 204 plates on 51 leaves are inserted in the appropriate places through the biblical text. Later black calf binding, the boards panelled with gilt rolls and corner tools. The spine with raised bands and gilt pallets. Rubbed on the edges and corners and an old damp mark at the top of the rear board, not visible on the text leaves. Marbled endpapers. Occasional headlines or catchwords trimmed by the binder.
