1695 Prince Arthur by Blackmore King Arthur FOLIO Glorious Revolution William III

Sir Richard Blackmore, M.D. was a 17th-century English poet who is responsible for a 1695 epic entitled 'Prince Arthur'. This story was Blackmore's retelling of the Glorious Revolution and a celebration of the life and reign of William III. While it tells the tale of the famous King Arthur, whom William III adored, and his defense against the Saxons, it also was greatly influenced by Geoffrey of Monmouth and his 'History of Britain'.

This incredible 1695 edition is the first edition to be published with an index, something the first printing lacked. An impressive folio!

Folio, pp. [xx], 296, [iv]; [ii], xvii, [i], 343, [ix]. Publisher's catalogue at end of Preface (i.e. p.xx), index at the end of each work. Intermittent damp-staining toward gutter especially to the second work, occasional light foxing, a few faint smudgy marks. Contemporary brown calf, raised bands with recent red Morocco gilt spine label added, blind-tooled borders and frames to boards, edges faintly sprinkled red, endpapers renewed. Spine repaired at head and tail, joints split but cords holding firm, scuffs and scrapes, edges worn, corners frayed, still a good, sound copy. To the title-page, inscriptions of Ed. Southcott and Charles (D?) Sharpe both in old hands. Index's presence is not problematic as it is printed on different stock & the last page of the poem's text has no catchword. All edges speckled. Full inlaid paneled calf ruled & stamped in blind with 2nd spine compartment titled & decorated in gilt. Both boards splitting at head & tail of spine to 1st & 5th raised bands respectively; inner hinges intact & text bright & clean. [Wing B3080].
