Full contemporary brown calf with red calf spine label. 4 folding charts plus frontis chart. Condition is GOOD ; both joints cracked, front cover held on by single lower main thread, rear holding very well. Spine has a minor vertical surface crack but is fine, the label is a little age-crinkled but entire. First few pgs of text, up to title pg., are detached but held by the front binding. Front pastedown has a large label from a nautical store in Portland, Maine. Covers otherwise have normal wear and are clean. Text is clean and bright. All fold-out plates very good except the Gulf Stream, which has a small closed tear from the binding end. Endpapers have a bit of foxing. We care for all calf bindings with Talas formula. Naut. RGR.

The nineteenth edition of this exhaustive description of the Atlantic coast of North America and the northern part of South America, including islands in the Caribbean. An appendix glued to the reverse of the preface page, dated to July of 1863. GOOD condition. Heavy scuffing and bumping to the extremities and spine, with minor to moderate scuffing to the covers themselves. Minor soiling to the covers. Uneven darkening and fading. Hinges cracked along the exterior and beginning to separate, making the covers somewhat tenuously attached to the text block. Text block solid, with minor to moderate scattered foxing throughout. Minor scattered soiling and staining. A few pages with large dog-ear creases.

Full contemporary brown calf with black calf spine label. Condition is GOOD ; front joint is cracked and holding only at the upper inch. The spine has some loss along that upper end, with loss of about 1/3 of the label. The text binding is pulled at pg 39, with the following 8 pgs loose but present. Twp pgs of text at pg 131 are detached but present. Pg 445 is detached but present. Covers also show long use, with slight loss at corners, which are bumped, and some surface wear and a few spots of paper stuck on. Text has some sections that are browned but readable, overall some toning and minor foxing. Ffep is lacking, if one existed. Title pg has some faint water stains. Full contemporary calf with red calf spine label. 17 plates, many folding, all present. Condition is VERY GOOD ; joints strong with no cracks. Covers clean with usual wear to corners and spine ends. Spine, just above label, has a small pulled nick. Binding tight. Book has a faint water stain throughout, to the lower right portions of text and plates. Plates are quite good, some with a bit of foxing or a tiny fold tear - the latter two large fold-outs have been misfolded a bit to create some sticking out from the text, the plate with Sapello Island has a small, partly open tear on one fold. Ffep has "John Steward(?) Book" in a contemporary hand, sepia ink. Front pastedown has three round spots, some early orange paper? Text overall very clean and readable. We care for all calf bindings with Talas products. Naut. RGR.
