Louis Antoine de Bougainville was an 18th-century French explorer who, after serving in the American Revolution, gained notoriety for his attempt to circumnavigate the world. This voyage became famous for being the first expedition to make records of the Falkland Islands and other islands near Papua New Guinea. The two-ship expedition which began in 1766 spent much time in Tahiti and Samoa gaining information on the local tribes, and much of what we know now of these peoples is attributed to Bougainville and his expedition.

Some faint dampstaining in upper gutter margin on first few leaves, minor scattered foxing. Very good. "Nouvelle édition augmentée." A reduced edition of this important work, first published in 1771. This edition includes a brief dictionary of nautical terms (twenty- two pages). Bougainville first undertook an expedition to the Falkland Islands and Patagonia, at his own expense, to secure them for French colonization. To avoid possible conflict due to Spain's envy of this acquisition, France gave up the territory to her. A most attractive copy of the Neuchâtel version of the official account of the Bougainville voyage, based on the first French edition of 1771. This was the first official French circumnavigation and in many ways the most consequential of all the many French voyages into the Pacific, commemorated on today's maps by a multitude of geographical names. Louis Antoine de Bougainville (1729-1811) studied law but abandoned it to join the army as a musketeer in 1753, serving in the Seven Years War.
