Millet Company, 1898. ,,The photograph has lightened, but the image is clearly defined,From the explanation printed on the tissue guard: 'The koto is the most important of Japanese musical instruments, and proficiency in playing upon it is highly esteemed. The tones evoked have but little resonance, and the compositions are so peculiar as to be unitelligible to foreigners'. The photograph shows a young Japanse woman, in traditional dress, kneeling before the instrument. It is apparently a studio photograph, taken by Tamamura Kozaburo. This is an albumen photograph, made by using silver salts suspended in egg white. It is taken from a volume of the famous 'Japan' set, published by J. B. Millet Company in 1897/1898, in a series of editions. The photograph is in exceptional condition; the tissue guard has a small closed tear. The photograph, with explanatory tissue guard, measures 20 x 25 cm as mounted, and 31 x 40 cm on the page.

Extensively illustrated with tissue protected black and white photographic plates. One colour frontispiece in each volume. Scattered browning, mostly to the margins of the tissue sheets and thus transferred to the margins of some plates. Fading to colour frontispieces. Some small flaws to page edges due to incompetent cutting of pages when book was first opened. Small tear to front interior hinge of volume 3. A few small stains and flaws to boards. Otherwise fine. Each of the large volumes contains numerous black-and-white photos, and three delicately-coloured coloured albumen photographs by Tamamura Kozaburo, each with explanatory tissue guard (thirty in total). There are also five collotype flower plates (by K. Ogawa). Condition varies as amongst the volumes. Five are in very good condition; five have a foredge stain affecting extreme outer margin of pages. The binding of volume III is very soiled. All bindings tight. Some albumen photos have lightened. The flower colour plates still quite vivid.
