Foxing to edges. <br> William Jennings Bryan was a Democratic and Populist leader and a magnetic orator who ran unsuccessfully three times for the U.S. presidency (1896, 1900, and 1908). His enemies regarded him as an ambitious demagogue, but his supporters viewed him as a champion of liberal causes. He was influential in the eventual adoption of such reforms as popular election of senators, income tax, creation of the Department of Labor, Prohibition, and women's suffrage. Throughout his career, his Midwestern roots clearly identified him with agrarian interests, in opposition to those of the urban East.

Hinges cracked, corners bumped, gilt on the spine faded, a good only copy lacking the dustwrapper. Bryan (1860-1925) was a politician, and served as Secretary of State. He is better known for leading the prosecution in the Scopes Trial (also called the "Monkey Trial") at which Clarence Darrow was the attorney for the defense of teaching Charles Darwin's theory of evolution. Matthew Harrison Brady's character in the play, and later motion picture, *Inherit the Wind*, was based on Bryan.
