Pamphlet, 8vo, illustrated, 72, [11 book ads] pp. Lacks front wrapper, but otherwise complete, title soiled a bit with a few chips or tears at the extremities, not affecting text, contents page creased, some corners with folds and small tears, normal aging; quite good internally. Early, and somewhat scarce dental title, which was probably first published in 1847. Burdell covers everything from the role of temporary teeth to the effects of artificial food. This work provides a very useful picture of the state of dentistry in the mid 19th century, which includes 44 nicely done illustrations. The last 11 pages are a catalogue of medical books for sale on phrenology, hydropathy, physiology, and psychology. #100968

Description:
New York: Fowlers & Wells, 1847. 12mo, pp. viii, [1], 10-72, [12] ads; 44 wood-engraved figures in the text; original pictorial green wrappers; slight split along the upper joint, else very good. John Burdell was a popular New York dentist. He was known for advocating against the use of tobacco products due to their detrimental effects on dental health. In this work he discusses the anatomy of the jaw, various dental afflications, and remedies for proper care and maintenance. He was the brother of Harvey Burdell, also a dentist who was married to, and reportedly murdered by, Emma Cunningham. She was tried and acquitted in one of the most publicized trials of the Victorian Era.
