Frayed at corners and spine caps, worn, and soiled with chip in spine strip which has been reglued. Boards and spine are straight. Binding is tight. Foxing to front matter. Frontispiece is foxed but protected by tissue. Pages are lighty toned but clean and in very good condition. A good candidate for rebinding. .

Twenty-seven lithographed plates including the frontispieces, eleven are folding, plus large fold-out color map, and twenty-eight text illustrations. Index. Burton noted this work as a "pot-pourri" on "Unexplored Syria," containing articles by Burton Drake, Mrs. Burton and others -- rather than a continuous and smooth narrative -- compiled during sundry desert explorations Burton was Consul in Damascus from 1865-197, and Drake came to Syria under the auspices of the Palestine Exploration Society. Scarce set in original cloth, interior contents clean, a few map folds reinforced with archival tape, light cover soiling, a few corners bumped, two small cloth puckers (approx. one by one inches) cover of Vol.I and back cover Vol.II.

Account of the lands and tribes of Syria, written by Burton and Drake while Burton was British consul in Damascus. Drake had walked from the Sinai through desert Palestine with Edward Palmer on the first surveying expedition of the Palestine Exploration Fund. With the large folding map, 27 plates (11 folding), and 28 illustrations in the text. 8vo, mustard cloth with ruled and decorated in black and blind on spine and covers, spines lettered in black. [xx], 360; [viii], 400. A unusually nice and bright set, hinges tight and strong with much less than the usual wear to the original cloth bindings. Half title in Volume I cut. Penzer notes three states of the binding, but none match the binding on this copy, which has a ruled border and fancy border on the upper covers in black, on the lower covers in blind, and no lettering on the covers. A miscellany of information about unknown regions of Syria compiled during several months wanderings in the deserts. Burton and his wife were station at Damascus; Charles Tyrwhitt-Drake and Edward Henry Palmer, who were working under the auspices of the Palestinian Exploration Fund, did a bit of exploring… Read More
