Howes 1038. - Seltene einzige Ausgabe der noch heute interessanten, lesenswerten wenig bekannten Reiseaufzeichnungen. Busch (1821-99) hatte 1849 am Dresdner Maiaufstand teilgenommen und emigrierte 1851 in die USA. Er lebte als Pfarrer in Cincinnati und kehrte 1852 wieder nach Europa zurück. Der als Bismarck-Biograph berühmt gewordene Publizist beschreibt hier seine Erlebnisse, Beobachtungen und Studien und schildert Land und Leute mit größter Genauigkeit. Detaillierte geographische Beschreibungen, historische Abrisse - z. B. die Geschichte der Mormonen -, eingestreute deutsche und amerikanische Lieder und kritische auch ironische Schilderungen machen das Werk zu einem informativen Zeitdokument. Es entstand eine sehr interessante, anschaulich geschriebene Geschichte Amerikas. - Tls. etwas fleckig.

Fine copy of the first edition. Descriptons of Busch’s journeys in the western states and the Mississippi Valley, especially in Cincinnati and the Ohio River towns. It also contains a chapter on life among the Shakers and the Mormons. Moritz Busch (1821-99) immigrated to the United States after being disappointed by the 1848-revolution in Europe, but he returned in 1853.

An important travel narrative by a learned German who was keenly interested in American customs, religions, politics, and folklore. The author's training in theology explains his interest in American religious groups such as Mormons, Shakers, and Dunkards, but his translation and analysis of thirteen Negro spirituals place Busch above the standard observer and may even establish him as the pioneer scholar of American folklore. His itinerary through New York, Ohio, Kentucky, and Missouri provided much material for his absorbent mind to digest.
