The first and second issues bound together in one volume. 8vo in 1/4 red morocco on marbled paper, raised bands, title and decorations in gilt, marbled endsheets, new endpapers. Light foxing throughout the second issue, ancient p.o. signature at the top of the first issue title page. The odd thing is that the binder got stuff out of order. The second issue ('the end' and imprint on page 188) is first in the volume, followed by the first issue, and then followed by the November 1822 ads that accompanied the second issue. The sheets in the first issue and the ads have been trimmed to 203mm; the second issue sheets remain 210mm.

From the library of English astronomer, politician, ornithologist, bibliophile and philatelist James Lindsay, 26th Earl of Crawford with his bookplate to the pastedown.

Bound in publisher's "brown drab wrappers with no label" (soiled and stained, corners chipped and some bent, rear loose, spine worn. Stained on the front blanks and half-title, a good copy in the original, as issued, format. This is the first issue without "the end" and the imprint on page 188 and with 7 pages of adv in the rear dated November, 1822. Wise I, 163.; Randolph p. 79. A tall copy, Wise notes that his copy is wraps is 8-7/8 this is more like 8-15/16 x 5-1/2 in. This was issuied in an edition of 5000 copies. This verse drama is a retelling of Kruitzner, or the German's Tale in Harriet Lee's Canterbury Tales.

George Gordon Byron, more commonly known as Lord Byron, was an English poet and a prominent figure in the Romantic movement. He has always been regarded as one of Britain's greatest poets. His play 'Werner', or 'The Inheritance'
was his attempt to transform theater at the time. 'Werner' was an adaptation of Harriet Lee's "Kruitzner" though it was poorly received at the time and has not gained much following since.
This 1823 English edition was published in London by Murray.

Bound in contemporary brown leather covered with elaborate gilt tooling and titling. Six-band embossed spine; burgundy silk end papers. Text block is age-toned with dusty deckled edges. First end page has a tipped-in folded letter (forged) from Goethe about a contribution to Lord Byron's Monument. Second end page has a folded, lengthy note from W.C. Macready concerning a personal legal matter (Macready was the best actor performing Werner for twenty years (1830-1850) both in England and the U.S.).
