In near fine maroon cloth boards, gilt titles to back strip. The covers are clean, tight and straight; very slightly shelf-cocked. The front free end paper has library 'withdrawn' stamp etc; the other end papers are unmarked. Lightly tanned cut edges. The text block is in very good condition, firm, square and not tanned or foxed. With library stamps on copyright page and page 1.Overall condition of book is very good. In very good pictorial dust jacket, with academic male seated with book to front. The jacket is clean, edge-worn, with a few tiny closed tears on spine ends. Not price clipped.

Signed to title page by the author with a lengthy, interesting and relevant inscription: There is more in this than the radio series. Frankly, the original idea was evangelical - a sort of text book for teachers written by a teacher (for a change) but it got away from me: I became too interested in some of the people in it. And then there was Emma Foxberrow - she was an awful disruption! One last detail - in the early part of the story there is an on-going business of a moveable spanner. Every bit of that is true.
