Frontis. with closed tear, is detached but present + 4 maps + 1 fold-out map. Title page and a few pages of text at rear have red crayon and title page also has some blue crayon. Some worming throughout and pages are browned. No ownership inscriptions. Priced due to condition.

Spine discolored, with gilt darkened. Moderate edge-wear and bumping to corners. Edges toned; handwritten date to front endpaper, with old owner's blindstamp to bottom of title-page. One leaf shows a minor wrinkle from the binding process ( not affecting the print), and now stands a little proud in text-block. Otherwise clean, tight and unmarked. Very neat -- a sound and still handsome copy. Blood portrait frontispiece, plus six maps/plans, two of which are colour fold-out. xviii,337pp..

Very Good. 8vo (337 pages, with frontis portrait and 6 maps (including 2 fold-out in color.). This is the Second Edition (First printing) of the Colonial Library issue, which was bound from “Silver Library” sheets for export to the colonies. Only 360 copies of this printing were issued in cloth, according to bibliographer Ronald Cohen (another 130 were bound in softcover). The harsher climate conditions in the colonies generally resulted in low survival rates for these volumes. This copy was preserved by virtue of an elegant burgundy cloth rebinding over marbled boards. The title page reads: "New Edition" with the "1898" publication date. The contents are tight, with the frontispiece tissue guard present. There is mild scattered foxing throughout and a single discreet inked notation: “1897 July” in the margin of page 49. Else fine.

This could have been an exceptionally good copy of the First State of the First English edition, with the rear publisher’s catalogue dated 12/97 and the Eratta slip present. The cloth is still bright but the original owner elected to write his name: “E.D. Miller” in fountain pen across the front cover. He also prominently scrawled his name, again, with his address in ink on the verso of the frontis photo, which retains its tissue guard. There is a faint dent to the edge of the front cover. The binding is strong, though the front hinge has some separation and there is chipping to the black endpapers. The contents are otherwise fine, save for very faint scattered foxing. Attractive but flawed, and priced accordingly.

This is a beautiful copy of the Second Colonial Library edition, bound in a vivid blue-green cloth fascinatingly different from the standard Colonial Library gray-green cloth. The Second Colonial Library edition was bound from “Silver Library” sheets for export to the colonies. Only 360 copies of this printing were bound in cloth, according to bibliographer Ronald Cohen (another 130 were bound in softcover). “Intended for circulation only in India and the British colonies,” Colonial Library volumes did not generally fare well, due to the colonies’ harsher climate conditions.
