Text clean and unmarked except for usual library treatments. Several b/w illustrations. Green cloth boards with imprint on front cover; cover shows some wear, including crease on front. Binding stitched with split in front of title page.

San Francisco: Whitaker & Ray Company, 1904. First edition. Original cloth. 4to. 228pp; 538pp. Frontispiece portraits; Illustrations; Map; Index. Original red cloth with glit lettering to spines; blindstamped portrait to front covers. Slight fading to spines; minor wear to extremities; else a fine set. An extensive history on the early development of the lower and upper California missions. "The author, a well-known San Francisco arcitect, 'epitomizes the principal events in a most satisfactory manner.' Vol. II deals with the missions of Alta California. Almost the entire edition was destroyed in the 1906 fire and earthquake." - Weber, The California Missions, pg. 18. Scarce thus.
