Eugene Cordell was known as an outstanding Maryland medical historiographer, physician, author and teacher. At the outbreak of Civil War he entered the Confederate Army. He was wounded in action at Winchester, Virginia, on September 19, 1864. He was taken prisoner in 1865 and held until the war's end. He graduated from the University of Maryland Medical School in 1868. He subsequently went on to serve as attending physician in the Baltimore General Dispensary. Then he served as Librarian at the Medical and Chirurgical Faculty of Maryland. He practiced medicine in Baltimore during the 1870's.
