New York: P. J. Kenedy, 1881. Mary Francis Cusack (1829-1899), known as "the nun of Kenmare," was an Anglo-Irish convert to Roman Catholicism. A prolific writer and an outspoken Irish patriot, she used the profits from her many publications to feed the poor, particularly during the Famine. She later converted back to the Anglican religion. For such an well-known writer, her works are rather scarce today. This is a Very Good Plus copy of the First Edition. Fancy Victorian decorative binding: dark red cloth with blindstamped and filled designs; with a gilded second title on the front board: "Ireland's Present Agitation." Mildly bumped, with a bit of fray to the head of the spine. Illustrated with engravings and a frontis portrait of the author in her habit. Clean text, with moderate foxing throughout.
