[just a bit of wear to book, but with soiling/spotting/browning to page edges, one-time owner's signature at top of ffep; alas, the jacket's a mess, heavily edgeworn, with a ragged diagonal tear across the front panel (pretty much held together by the jacket protector) and various other small deprecations]. Goodis's next-to-last hardcover novel, prior to his descent (and I mean that in the nicest possible way) in the netherwold of paperback originals, where he did much of his best work. As noted by Francis M. Nevins Jr., this novel displays "many of the character types, settings, and motifs [that] recur with ritualistic frequency in his later paperbacks." Not the prettiest copy you'll ever see, but then a truly nice copy would take a much bigger bite out of your wallet. .

The dust jacket is particularly nice, with just a touch of wear to the top edge of the spine + aging / foxing evident on rear cover. Book is solid, but does have a slight (not too bad) storage odor.

The portrait of her is unflattering, but she is the prototype for the women in his later paperback noir mysteries. The book is in near fine condition in a dust jacket that is clean and bright and split along the length of the rear flap fold.. First Edition. Hard Cover.
