Description:
Philadelphia, Pennsylvania: Leary & Getz, 1853. [The title continues:] WITH FULL INSTRUCTIONS HOW TO PERFORM THE VARIOUS TRICKS, ON CARDS, DICE, BIRDS, RINGS &c. Engraved frontispiece, 71 pages of text, and a 64 page catalogue of "historical, theological, juvenile, and miscellaneous" books published by Leary & Getz. 16mo. First Philadelphia edition, preceded in the United States only by editions published in New York and Boston. Like all early editions, this one is rare--WorldCat locates only 3 copies in libraries worldwide. First published in 1722, the book drew extensively on Reginald Scot's The Discoverie of Witchcraft (1584) and William Vincent's Hocus Pocus Jr. The Anatomie of Legerdemain (1634) for its description of magic tricks, many of which are performed by magicians today. The book's popularity among magicians was so strong that there were numerous editions published in the eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries, but paradoxically demand was so… Read More

Description:
Printed and Sold by T. Sabine, No. 81, Shoe Lane, Fleet Street, and by all Booksellers in Town and Country. London. No date [1790?]. Ninth Edition, with large Additions and Amendments. 12mo.. pp. 108. Woodcut frontispiece within the pagination, numerous text woodcuts. Original unlettered canvas binding with the slightest wear to the head of the spine; the boards, from the spine to the edge of the front board is 93 mm. at the top and 90 mm. at the lower edge and the resultant diminution of c.3mm. accounts for the shaving of the book-block prior to binding; the shaving has reduced the fore-edge margins throughout with the occasional loss of some letters. This is entirely original - these canvas bindings were produced by specialist binders for inexpensive books, either school text books or those sold door-to-door by pedlars. Two leaves have original paper flaws - in one of these, the top corner had been creased prior to printing resulting in the final letters at the end of the first six lines recto… Read More

Description:
London: Printed by T. Sabine, 1785. MAGIC AND CONJURING. Eighth edition, "with large Additions and Amendments." Twelvemo (5 3/4 x 3 7/16 inches; 147 x 87 mm). [3]-108 pp. With woodcut frontispiece and numerous woodcuts illustrations in the text. We could only find one copy on OCLC at Brown University, and one copy at auction in 1979. The frontispiece is pasted down to front cover, as probably issued as the other copies seem to have it the same way. This edition is not listed on ESTC, two other copies which are both "Ninth" editions, rather than eighth, printed by T. Sabine are listed, both of which are dated [1790?]. Our present copy does have the same pagination and catchword on page 14 "pudding" as one of these listings (T138106). Contemporary drab brown cloth, with some minor rubbing. A bit of light toning and a few minor stains throughout. Previous owner's old ink signature on rear pastedown, dated 1793. Previous owner's initials "I. M. 1792" stamped on the cloth of the back board. Overall a… Read More

London: Printed for J. Bew, 1789. MAGIC AND CONJURING. Ninth edition "corrected, and improved with an entire new Set of Cuts." Twelvemo (5 7/8 x 3 3/8 inches; 150 x 86 mm). [3]-132 pp. With frontispiece woodcut and numerous other woodcuts throughout the text. The woodcuts in this edition are a bit cleaner and more refined than those of the T. Sabine eighth edition. We could only find two copies of this on OCLC, no copies on ABPC in the past 40 years and only one other copy on Rare Book Hub. ESTC does not list a J. Bew edition of 1789 but this conforms to that of the listing for the 1781 edition. Contemporary drab brown cloth. With remnants of original paper on spine with "Hocus Pocus" in manuscript. With some minor rubbing to cloth. Cloth is starting to split along front and back hinge. Inner hinges cracked but holding. A one-inch split to top outer hinge. A bit of light toning and a few minor stains throughout. Previous owner's old ink signature on front pastedown, and front free endpaper. Overall… Read More
