Ex-library with label on lower corner of front endpapers. Leather worn with tear at lower extremes of spine up the front hinge for 2.5 inches. Corners bumped and faded. Boards scuffed. Endpapers torn out at front with scribbling on the back endpapers. Wear to unpaginated first pages with deterioration to pager along edges, particularly the bottom edge. Ink and penciling on title/content pages. Some browning and staining throughout but texts are clear and in very good condition for reading. Sold "as-is." This odd-volume contains a variety of Lucian's important works as well as a sampling of 18th Century English translation by some of the most important authors of the day including Dryden and Walter Moyle. Quarter Leather. Lucian of Samosata was an Assyrian satirist and rhetorician best known for his extensive use of sarcasm in ridiculing superstition, religious practices, and belief in the paranormal. Lucian's works had a major impact on Western literature and inspired such writers as Thomas Moore, Shakespeare, Francois Rabelais, and Jonathan Swift. John Dryden was an English poet, translator, and playwright appointed England's first Poet Laureate in 1668. He dominated English literature in Restoration England to such an extent that the period became known in literary circles as the Age of Dryden. .
