Light bumping & rubbing, small stains on vol. l.

Complete in One Volume, Bound in brown embossed cloth with gently bumped crown and foot of spine cloth, as are corners. "Wallpaper' end-papers are clean, no markings. Only one tiny 'splash' mark to closed foredge. Rear exterior board is mildly soiled with three short 'ripples' (see photo). A tight, clean text block. A wonderful classic. 750 pages.

This is a special set of Eliot's Works by the Lovell Company that was mostly a reprint house and was never on solid financial footing - thus the inexpensive paper used that quickly oxidized/toned. NY: Harper & Brothers, 1873. Hardcover. Very Good/No Jacket. The author's last two published novels bound together, very good in a binding with maroon leather spine and corners over boards with a sort of marbling. The book's spine is worn, and the external rear gutter has about a 3" split in the leather. The front endpaper is detached and laid in, and has a stamp for Simon & Barnum Bookbinders in Utica, NY at the bottom. The next page is the title page for Middlemarch, with an 1873 date at the bottom. Middlemarch is 288 pages all in double column format. After the last page of Middlemarch is the title page for Daniel Derobnda, which appears to be the first US edition with an 1876 date at the bottom and on the copyright page. Daniel Deronda is 274 pages also in double column format. The spine of the book just has the two titles in gilt, with six gilt bands. The book is tight, although worn at corners and edges.

This is a Very Good (Plus) copy of a Later Printing of the First Editions, bound together in an omnibus; "Volume VII" of an unknown set. Mottled paper-covered boards with black leather tips and spine; gilt ruling and titling on the spine. Clean text; 274 pages, 145 pages, and 172 pages. Floral endpapers. The spine is rubbed heavily at the head and foot, lightly at the edges; one rear tip is soft; else very little wear. The textblock is clear and bright, with no foxing; perfectly readable today. Mary Hay's novels were initially published in three volumes, a popular format at the time, in 1875. This is the initial version in one volume; her works are scarce. . Later Printing. Hard Cover. Very Good (Plus)/No Jacket. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall.

Neither of the two Errata to which the slips applied, have been corrected. It is generally taken that sets bound from the parts are in this state, whereas in the later 4-volume issue, the book 5 Erratum has been corrected.

Ink ownership to first blank of each volume, with a large pencil inscription below it in 'Adam Bede'. Toning and spotting to edges, otherwise internally crisp and clean. Some light wear to bindings, otherwise an attractive very good set.
