This book offers the principal conclusions reached after a sociological investigation into the contact between Negroes and whites in the city of Sao Paulo. The city in question is important not so much because of its history under the slave system but because of its role in the emergence of urban industrial civilization in Brazil and because of its future, for it is the only Brazilian city with an economic, social, and cultural background capable of providing the energy to develop an open-class society.
