The book is of considerable interest for its contributions to the history of Hartford, and to the history of the practice of medicine and psychiatry in Connecticut. From the Foreword: "Throughout its history, the Institute has served the public as a private, not-for-profit psychiatric hospital. The first hospital of any kind in Connecticut, it was one of the earliest psychiatric hospitals in the United States."
