A touch of damp-staining framing the preliminary leaves. A touch foxed. xxiii [1] 278pp. Illustrated with 39 full-page illustrations from photographs, plus fold-out map and panorama to rear and numerous illustrations with text and vignettes. Freshfield was a British lawyer, author and a keen traveler and mountaineer. He edited the Alpine Journal from 1872 to 1880, was an active member of the Royal Geographical Society and the Alpine Club and served as President of both. He teamed with Italian photographer Vittorio Sella for this work. Freshfield was the first foreigner to reach the Eastern Summit on Elbrus; he led an exploration of the Caucasus and was the first man, officially, to conquer Kazbek with guides from the village Gergeti.
