Wien: Internationaler Psychoanalytischer Verlag,, 1930. First edition. Very Good +. FREUD, Sigmund. Das Unbehagen in der Kultur (Civilization and Its Discontents). Internationaler Psychoanalytischer Verlag, Wien, 1930. Half-title + TP + [5]-136. Octavo. First Edition. One of Freud’s most intensely studied and influential books, Civilization and Its Discontents, takes the foundational principles of psychoanalysis and applies them to man and his place in society. In this seminal book, Freud enumerates his understanding of the fundamental tensions that exist between civilization and the individual. The primary friction arises from the individual's quest for instinctual freedom and civilization's contrary demand for conformity and instinctual repression. Many of humankind's primitive instincts are clearly harmful to the well-being of a human community. As a result, civilization creates laws that prohibit killing, rape, and adultery, and it implements… Read More

Description:
Vienna: Internationaler Psychoanalytischer Verlag,, 1930. First edition, first printing, cloth issue. In this study, Freud "gave the fullest account of his views in the field of sociology, one which, as he said elsewhere, 'can be nothing other than applied psychology'" (Jones, p. 364). The first translation into English was published later that year by the Hogarth Press. Analysing the conflict between an individual's instinctive needs and the constraints and demands of society, the book "emphasized the continuance of hostile impulses within developed societies... Discontent was an inevitable aspect of civilization because, even though Oedipal aggression had been repressed, the wish had not; and the wish had the same power to produce guilt that the act did" (DSB, vol. 5, p. 178). Octavo. Original yellow cloth, spine and front board lettered in blue.… Read More
