This book falls naturally into three parts. The first is a vivid description of the Orkney islands as seen by the author in 1805. The second part is devoted to the history and archaeology; and the third part considers the economy of the islands, its natural history, botany, mineralogy, agriculture, fisheries and commerce. Green cloth boards, gilt titles. viii and 509 pages. Folding map of the Orkney Islands. Light vertical creasing to spine. Text block lightly browned. Contents clean. Pictorial dustwrapper is a little grubby.

London : Longman, Hurst, Rees and Orme, 1808 A fair to good copy of the second revised edition of Dr Barry's comprehensive account of the Orkney Islands in contemporary full leather binding. With folding map and 11 full page plates. The binding has gilt-lined raised bands, decorative gilt compartments and title label to spine, with titles and gilt border to front board. It is clean, but with wear to corners (with leather loss), and the top and bottom of the spine. There is splitting at the front spine joint. The endpapers are marbled, with the armorial bookplate of F Monteith Ogilvie to the front pastedown, and the decorative bookplate of John Davie Manson Robertson, a noted Orcadian book collection to the fep. THERE IS LIGHT WEAR TO BASICALLY CLEAN BOARDS, SMALL DISCOLORATION ON TOP CORNER OF FRONT BOARD, AND LIGHTLY WORN CORNERS. HINGES ARE TIGHT. ORIGINAL MAP AND ALL PLATES PRESENT IN VERY GOOD SHAPE. INTERIOR IS QUITE CLEAN AND BRIGHT WITH VIRTUALLY NO FOXING BEYOND THE ENDPAPERS. NO OWNER NAME, BOOKPLATE, WRITING OR MARKS.
