Water staining to front pastedown and pages throughout. Pages 193 - 196 are detached but still present. Page 197 is loose but just attached. Tearing to pages throughout. Thumb-marking present. Minor dog-eared corners. Pencil inscription to front endpaper. Noticeable creasing to gutter. Cracking to hinges and gutters, leaving netting exposed. Front and rear boards are loose but still attached. Boards have heavy edge-wear with bumping to corners, crushing to spine ends and rub wear all over. Notable tanning to spine and edges. Large splits to spine. Notable rubbing to boards. Water staining to all. Textblock is shaky.

Hardback book tightly bound in decorated leather with faded gilt titles, leather is worn and marked, spine with 4 raised bands has short split at top of front cover, faded name and bookseller stamp on front endpaper, some writing on rear endpapers and plate 23, pencil marks on some pages & plates, pages 1/2 has a long curved tear across bottom half. 602 pages, 19 illustrations on plates, frontispiece has remains of tissue guard, index. Index and plate list indicate there should be a further 60 pages and 7 plates but there is no indication that these were ever bound in. Heavy book so additional postage maybe requested .

London: Thomas Kelly, 1862. Corrected and enlarged edition, Volume one only, but has all 56 hand-coloured plates inc. tiger's head vignette on half-title and the often missing "White Negroes". This copy ihas ben professionally rebound in green calf with brown spine. Matching green spine panels with gilt. Marbled endpapers. Lower third of frontis portrait of the Count of Buffon is missing. Text stops mid-sentence at pp680, so there are possibly two pages missing at the rear. But plates are present and mostly in good condition. Foxing throughout. Now a splendid looking copy with some stunning illustrations. Heavy copy might require extra postage. Ref:114804. New, Enlarged Edition. Full Leather. VG/N/a. 21x27.5cm.
