London: Longman, Hurst ,Rees and Orme, 1809. First edition. Hardcover. pp. 406. 8vo. Re-bound in wine-red buckram with strengthened hinges and plain endpapers. Folding map, 3 folding tables. Large folding map has been re-backed. The binding is a bit pedestrian in appearance but quite serviceable and in very good condition. The contents show expected foxing, mainly near the beginning of the book, but it is not untoward. Overall, a good plus copy of a scarce and important comment on early Canadian political and economic history.

Lande 281. Morgan p160. Gagnon I-1548. Sabin 28393. Story p679. ' Waterston p24. Gray stayed in Quebec City and Montreal. His letters cover three years travel in pursuit of business and social pleasures. He writes dramatically of the fine air of winter at Montmorency and Chaudiere Falls; sleighs and wagons on ice, the dog sledges on country roads. Gray also describes a emerging intellectual life, politics in the Assemblies and a first growth of journals in Lower Canada. He created controversy by including remarks about British fears that a French army could march into Lower Canada from the United States and be welcomed by the French Canadians. Description:
London: Longman, Hurst, Rees, and Orme, 1809. First Edition. Good. Tall octavo, 406pp. Folding map present, though inserted after the Contents. There are (apparently) three folding charts called for, and they appear to all be present here, though it appears that the binder rather lazily kept two of the plates, which had been printed on the same sheet, together, thus creating one very long folding chart (if this is unclear, we will endeavor to explain). There does not seem to be any missing content. Front board and front free endpaper detached, but present. Folding map bears some old repair work, and was re-inserted into the book upside-down. Leather dry, and corners worn. The internal contents are clean, crisp, and bright. A serviceable reading copy in a contemporary binding, which could benefit from some inexpensive structural repair work. In good condition overall. Very important survey of Eastern Canada dating to the eve of the War of 1812. Sabin 28393.
