Description:
Philadelphia, PA: Lippincott, Grambo & Co.. Good. 1851-1857. First Edition. Hardcover. Six-volume set bound in later blue cloth with leather labels on spine. Cloth is lightly soiled and specked with numerous small dots of white. Binding is tight on all volumes. Interior generally clean with scattered areas of light foxing. Most tissues for plates are present. This is an ex-library set of first editions. As best as I can tell, EACH and EVERY plate, map and illustration and title page has a library stamp, often smack within the map or plate. If you can get past the issue of the library stamping, this would make an excellent research set for any library. "Henry Schoolcraft worked for years on the history and survey of the Indian tribes of the United States. It was published in six volumes from 1851 to 1857 by J. B. Lippincott & Co. Of Philadelphia. Critics praised its scholarship and valuable content by Schoolcraft, and the meticulous and knowledgeable illustrations. Schoolcraft… Read More

Six thick folio volumes. Numerous plates and maps, many tinted or in color. Modern quarter leather and marbled boards, spines gilt with leather label. Light foxing and toning, some offsetting. Presentation inscription by George Moneypenny in first two volumes. Very good. Description:
London: Lippincott, Gambo & Co., 1851-7. Cloth. Very Good. 13.5" by 10". Seth Eastman. A very scarce, signed presentation set of this important ethnographical work on Native Americans. This was the most extensive nineteenth century work on the subject and is beautifully illustrated throughout. The most extensive work on Native Americans published in the 19th-century containing "a vast mass of really valuable information" (Field). This title was commissioned by the US Congress. This set has an excellent association. All volumes belonged to Buckingham Smith. Buckingham Smith was a diplomat and historian of Spanish exploration in Florida and the Americas. Schoolcraft acknowledges his use of Smith's transcripts of documents held in the Archivo-General in volume III. Smith made these transcripts during his posting as secretary of legation in 1850-2. Schoolcraft also made use of Smith's translation of 'Alvar Nunez Cabeza de Vava' for this work. Schoolcraft and several other contemporaries… Read More
