I would imagine he was required to travel though the colonies. He used his talents as an artist to record his travels. This volume contains a number of foldout reproductions of his artwork including a map of the St. Lawrence River which here appears after the Preface instead at the back in the original publication circa 1808. A large section of the book is devoted to The Manners and Customs of the American Indians with an appendix of words from the Algonquin tongue with English meanings .

Heriot was the deputy postmaster general of British North America, and in this capacity had the opportunity to travel throughout Canada and the northern United States. Heriot's book is one of the most important Canadian travel narratives, and contains an account of his various excursions between 1800 and 1806. The second part provides detailed descriptions of many of the North American Indian groups, including material taken from Lahontan, Mackenzie, Vancouver, and others, as well as the Jesuit manuscripts in Montreal..
