Octavo. 31 pages. During the 1930s, Hughes campaigned extensively for the rights of workers. His poetry from this period reflects the heady idealism and solidarity which he and many other artists hoped to realize. Later, when his activities came under scrutiny during the Communist purges, Hughes felt pressure to distance himself from this period of his writing, and prevented reprints from being made. With the poems in this collection, it is not hard to imagine their message in application to the current political climate, and particularly the hopeful asylum seekers. In a poem titled "Justice", Hughes writes "That Justice is a blind goddess/ Is a thing to which we poor are wise: Her bandage hides two festering sores/ That once perhaps were eyes".
