[African American] Hughes, Langston. A New Song: A Collection of Poems With an introduction by Michael Good. New York: International Workers Order, 1938. Staplebound in tan pictorial wrappers. Octavo. 31 pages. During the 1930s, Hughes campaigned extensively for the rights of workers. His poetry from this period reflects the heady idealism and solidarity which he and many other artists hoped to realize. Later, when his activities came under scrutiny during the Communist purges, Hughes felt pressure to distance himself from this period of his writing, and prevented reprints from being made. With the poems in this collection, it is not hard to imagine their message in application to the current political climate, and particularly the hopeful asylum seekers.
