Spotting to endpapers, wearing to spine and edges with some of the cloth peeling, bumped corners. Very good. A collection of myths, legends, and ghost stories supposedly written by Thomas Ingoldsby who lives in Tappington Manor. However, this is the pseudonym of Richard Harris Barham who was an English clergyman. An attractive edition with delicate gilt decorations.

Very light rubbing to gitl stamps on spine, with some wear to heads and tails. Inked notations to endpapers. Hinges of first volume starting but holding quite nicely. A clean, near fine copy, with some gentle bowing to the vellum as often found, neat gift inscription dated 1909. A particularly bright copy. A classic collection of poetry, ghost stories and legends that are mostly parodies or deliberately humorous. First printed in the Bentley's Miscellany and New Monthly magazines, and first published in book-form between 1840 and 1847.

These popular tales, which were purportedly based on the author's discovery of old documents, were in fact mostly reworkings of known narrative sources such as Kentish myth and Sir Walter Scott.
