Rear hinge totally broken on the inner side, joint still sound; front hinge starting. Leather covers missing large surface chips at fore-edge of front, smaller ones to rear, cracks at corners with chips & tears at spine extremities. Board corners bumped and frayed. In original embossed and gilt-titled leather, marbled endpapers. The original was published in 1890, so this is a pretty early example, worthy of repairs. Ships at estimated cost. Funk & Wagnalls Company, New York and London, 1898. 4th Edition. Hardcover. Poor/No Jacket. Two volumes (complete). The reference number refers to BOTH volumes. Both are individually very heavy. Both are fully bound in leather. They are much worn and scuffed all about. Despite wear along the seams, the spines are sure and secure. They have a venerable character and are confident. Within, the contents are much worn and there have been attempts at repair. In general, however, the pages are clear and benign. Thumb tags are sound. Coloured plates are fresh and bright. There are occasional annotations. Both books have a previous owner (Henry William Ellis - dated Jan 1907) signature. This standard Dictionary of the English Language was Funk's most important achievement, the first volume of which was originally published in 1893. His aim was to provide essential information thoroughly and simply at the same time. In cloth bindings with gilt detailing. Externally, smart with rubbing and fading to boards. Hinges strained with front few pages to volume II detached but present. Internally, generally firmly bound.
