Description:
NY: Farrar, Straus and Giroux, 1966. 1st Edition. Hardcover. Near Fine/Near Fine. A fine first edition of Isherwood's memories, ruminations, diary entries, etc for the 1930s, with an ANS to a correspondent and literary admirer in which he clarifies his writing about the influence of E. M Forster in this book. The addresses is Hamilton Wright, a devoted bachelor who lived in the small New England village of Sharon, CT (and Manhattan and Florida). On a pre-stamped USPS postcard dated Aug 12, 1977, Isherwood corrects Wright's impression that Forster wrote Isherwood a letter telling him how to write. Isherwood directs Wright's attention to pages 104-105 of the ISHERWOOD AND HIS KIND where he writes that 'a Forster novel taught Christopher the mental attitude, etc etc' (but) 'as far I remember we (Forster and I) never discussed Forster's mental attitude or writing methods. I never asked him because I feel I got what I needed READING him". Fascinating commentary by one literary gay icon about another.
