Pages have mild tanning and foxing throughout, moderate at end-papers, paste-downs and text-block edges. Damp staining to prelims. Some occasional mild cracking to gutters throughout, binding remains reasonably firm. Heavy cracking at the hinges with exposed binding material. Boards have moderate edge-wear with bumping to corners and rubbing to surfaces. Mild crushing to spine ends. Book has a slight forward lean. Gilt lettering is bright and clear.

The boards are a little shelf rubbed and a touch worn. There is foxing on the early and last pages, little within the body of the book. The text is legible. The binding is excellent. Brighton: Published for the author by Wright & Son, 1833 Book. Good. Hardcover. xi, [i], 435, [1] pages + 6 plates, a folding map and the engraved title page. In addition to the listed plates, there are another 5 tiny plates which have been hand coloured. These are bound in mounted on larger sheets of paper - they show Hastings, Winchelsea and Battle Abbey. There is also a print of Chichester Cathedral tipped in facing page 393. A watercolour of Winchelsea church is bound in facing page 283. In the original cloth covered boards, but with a modern replacement spine and lettering label. New end papers also. There is an armorial bookplate to one of the front free end papers of Edward Weedon of Pimlico. The map and first few pages are rather browned and spotted. Pages at the end are soiled and have chips to the edges. Light browning and some soiling to page edges throughout..

Wright,, 1833. 8vo., First Edition, with a folding engraved map as frontispiece (lightly spotted, short tear in one fold, outer margin neatly and expertly repaired), engraved and mounted title, and 6 mounted steel-engraved plates, some light marginal foxing; strongly bound in later nineteenth century half calf, back gilt with five raised bands, morocco label gilt, red sprinkled edges, joints lightly rubbed else a very good, bright, crisp, clean copy. With personal bookplate on front free endpaper. This copy has been bound, as is usual, without the extra plate 'Arundel Castle', not called for in the list of plates but mentioned on p.382 (see Holloway, p.111). Anderson p.277; Holloway 99.
