Frontispiece and front free endpaper missing, but all 50 other plates present. Map of south central Africa at rear endpapers is missing large piece from top left corner (about 1/8th of map in total). Boards somewhat spotted with moderate wear to bottom two corners. Because of the missing frontispiece and section of map, this can only be described as a fair copy overall. 1.5 kilograms. All books in stock and available for immediate shipment from Winnipeg, Manitoba.

Toronto: Star Printing and Publishing, 1893. First Edition. Hardcover. Good. 8vo - over 7" - 9" tall. Original blue cloth puckered in spots, rubbed through at corners and spine ends. Binding sound, contents clean. 353 pp, with 51 gravure plates, but lacking the folding map. The author traversed the Marotse country and visited the Gonye and Victoria Falls, and continued to Bechuanaland, Matabeleland, and Mashonaland (Mendelssohn I, p. 788). "Despite Johnston's hunter-like attire and pose in the frontispiece, this work is primarily one of travel.... He does embark on hunts after hartebeest, impala, and ostrich, and describes a lion hunt near Salisbury" (Czech p. 146).

Rebound in red library buckram with gilt titles to spine. Ex library copy with library bookplate to front paste down and library slip pasted to rear. Library stamps throughout. Photogravures throughout and large fold out map of the area to rear; map has been relined. A very good, restored, ex library library copy.
