Description:
New York: Frederick A. Stokes Company, 1930. First US Edition . Hardcover. Good. 8vo - over 7¾ - 9¾" tall. See photos for condition details. Hardcover, blue cloth boards with gilt on front and spine. Exterior shows some scuffing and soiling along with edge and corner bumps/wear. The reason for the low condition grade is because both the front and rear hinges are cracked, though the front page is only partially opened. Pages are toned due to age and there are some smudge marks and scattered foxing spots. No signatures or bookplates, no library markings, and the only handwriting found is something that was written in pencil in the upper outside corner of the rear end page, and then later erased. This is the first US edition from 1930, following the London edition published through John Murray in 1929.

The Chateau was never more than 10 miles behind the front lines, but the Baroness refused to leave until 1918. She was referred to affectionately as "The Mother Of The British Army." Signed and inscribed by the author on the half-title page, in French. The author is inviting the recipient of the book to visit her at her Paris home on the Rue de Longchamp.
